GHYLL and CANYON

Ghyll scrambling and Canyoning

What is it?

There are a lot of Nordic influences here in the Lake District.  One of the most noticeable is the use of the word GYHLL to mean a mountain river or stream.

SCRAMBLING is to travel through rocky or uneven terrain.

So Ghyll scrambling is travelling through mountain streams and rivers.  This can look very different depending on which ghyll you are in, which is one of the reasons it is such an exciting activity...one trip is never the same from the next.

And CANYONING is the coming back down (often involving more jumps and abseils than Ghyll Scrambling).

Depending on the venue you can expect to encounter rocky terrain, moving water, deep pools, small jumps, big jumps and waterfalls.

Is it fun?

It doesn't get more fun that this!

Our Instructors are all qualified experts in their field and will make sure that, not only do you stay safe throughout the activity, but that you have the time of your life!

Am I capable?

Different venues offer different levels of challenge.  Have a good read of the description for each Ghyll and pick whichever one you feel is the right level for you.  And as always, feel free to get in touch with any specific wants/needs or concerns you may have.

Wetsuits

Wetsuits are provided within the price of your session (we never have any hidden costs).

Now we know that for some people, simply the idea of peeling themselves into a wetsuit is anxiety inducing, and as such we have thought long and hard about how to make this aspect of your adventure as simple, easy and versatile as possible...

We have a combination of Long Jon (sleeveless) wetsuits for ease of changing as well as comfortable 3mm neoprene jackets.  What this means is that if you're worried about getting little chilly, but don't want to be stuffed into a wetsuit all day then you can simply wear the neoprene jacket.  If its chilly, but not cold maybe just a long Jon. Or if like me you simply don't abide being cold then a combination of the two will be much more comfortable and warm than any regular full length wetsuit and easier to get on and off as well!

What Will I need?
